Lakers president & co-owner, Jeanie Buss, announced that former Laker Shaquille O’Neal will have a statue erected outside STAPLES Center. The date of the unveil is TBD. Shaq spent eight seasons with the purple & gold from 1996-2004 and cemented himself as the most dominant center during his time; some will argue he was the most physically dominant center since Wilt Chamberlain

During those years, he captured three straight titles and was an all-star each year. Also in those seasons, Shaq was second in points scored (13,895), fourth in total rebounds (6,090), and third in blocked shots (1,278). He also won his singular regular season MVP, and his three Finals MVPs make him one of four players with that many.

Here is what Jeanie Buss had to say on Shaq:

“We look forward to having Shaq join the other legends who have been honored with statues at STAPLES Center. He is a giant not only in size but also in stature and in what he accomplished as a Laker. Shaq literally broke the ground for the site and was hugely responsible for not only getting STAPLES Center built, but for making it one of the most successful and famous arenas in the world. It’s an honor that is well deserved.”

O’Neal joins all-time greats Magic Johnson, Jerry West, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with statues outside the arena. The reveal was first announced on Jimmy Kimmel Live
