Since 1976, Jim Boeheim has coached a myriad of talented players at Syracuse. He’s one of the greatest coaches in the history of basketball, and that reputation landed him a spot with Team USA back in 2006 as an assistant to Mike Krzyzewski.

Being a part of the Men’s National Team is a huge honor, and coaches get to be around 12 of the country’s best talents, a position that Boeheim doesn’t overlook. In an interview with ESPN’s Marc Stein, Boeheim had nothing but praise for his opportunity with USA Basketball, pointing out how great it is to be around so many gifted individuals.

“This is really different than the NBA,” said Boeheim. This is the best.”

Neither Boeheim nor Coach K has ever coached at the NBA level, and it’s to imagine them leaving their respective schools to jump ship. Boeheim elaborated with how different and surreal it is to coach at the Olympic level.

“This is getting the NBA players without agents, without anybody else telling them what they should do, with them willing to do exactly what we have to do to win. So it’s really not coaching in the NBA. It’s not even close. We know that. This is fantasy world.”
